Elegant and decorative plant , very appreciated for her poise rich of oval dark green , shiny leaves  and beautiful white fragrant  flowers .It is one the most popular houseplants , not difficult to manage, but in need of some attention ... Well, in short, like all plants!

It belongs to the Family of the  Rubiaceae (like the tree of coffee) and it is native to warm temperate climates such as China and Japan .It was   introduced in Europe in the 18th century.

In the apartment ,Gardenia begins to bloom between March and April  if correctly subjected to maintenance such as pruning to encourage its flowering . If treated well and fertilized these  plants can give some 30-40 flowers throughout the year. Removing  the dried flowers or malformed buds gives an immediate burst to new buds .The flowers measure  between 4 and 8 cm. The plant has got a high  pH acidity percentage and therefore it needs acid soil . The plant needs regular waterings in Spring and Summer while in Winter and after the blooms waterings should be reduced.  Gardenia needs a lot of light but NEVER exposed to the sun and in any case the temperature should not fall below 7-10 ° C. The most widespread species is the Gardenia JASMINOIDES whose definition refers to the scent of  the flowers that seems similar  to the jasmine: in 1800 it was in fact called "Jasmine Malabar" (Malabar, India).
